About Barry Stone

Barry Stone, an oil painter since his career as a land surveyor, has travelled widely, not only in his native New Zealand . With a keen eye to the lie of the land, his subject matter features mainly Australian and New Zealand landscapes and coastlines, which are painted in oils. Since Barry began using pastels, he has won several awards for his luminous pastel abstracts. He has been part of many exhibitions in the last 20 years, including several joint shows with his wife Nan. Barry has undertaken several commissions. Their joint home studio is at Villa 511 BallyCara, 37 Sunnyside Road, Scarborough - phone (07) 3203 5118 to arrange a viewing.

"I mainly paint for my own enjoyment the environment that I love. For me, the challenge comes in transposing nature's forms and moods onto the canvas through the eye, brain, hand and brush. Devising abstract images is even more of a challenge and intriguing exercise, which also absorbs my interest."

Barry, a retired land surveyor who practised in New Zealand and the South Pacific, has lived most of his life on the North Shore, Auckland, with time away in Whakatane, Rotorua, Fiji and Australia. He began painting in 1984, learning at many classes especially through Mairangi Arts Centre, of which he was a Trust Board member. A former member of NZ Fellowship of Artists, and currently of the Pastel Society of Australia (Qld), Barry paints for the sheer delight and the challenge of rendering onto canvas his love of the places where he has travelled . Barry is equally proficient in oils and chalk pastel, in landscape as well as abstract. Since 2007, Barry has been engaged in his art practice at his home studio in Scarborough, Queensland.
